SOAR to a New Career

What if you could continue your education close to home and be placed on the road to a well-paying job? Well, you can do both.

KCTCS has partnered with the Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) program to provide Eastern Kentucky residents with the educational opportunities that lead to good jobs.

What is SOAR?

SOAR is a homegrown movement in Eastern Kentucky that covers 54 counties which have battled economic challenges for decades. With a unified mission to attract and grow jobs in the area through better infrastructure, better health, better education and better training, SOAR is working to better connect Eastern Kentucky to the world both physically and virtually.

What programs are available?

Computer and Information Technology

One of the newest opportunities available through SOAR is a computer and information technology (CIT) track that well help prepare students to design, develop and maintain computer programs.

Why CIT? KCTCS has spoken with business and industries in the eastern Kentucky region and they have told us they are in critical need for skilled CIT workers. Currently, many of these businesses are forced to outsource the work to other areas of the country, or overseas, but with an education from one of our five SOAR colleges you can show companies you are committed to training for the workforce.

KentuckyWired

KentuckyWired is unlike any Commonwealth public infrastructure project in the last 50 years. Broadband - now considered an essential utility service - will significantly improve Kentucky’s almost non-existent connectivity and slow speeds and offer some of the fastest capacity in the U.S. –all with the potential to lower consumer costs and improve coverage.

So what is KCTCS' role? Well, in addition to our colleges being the location for several of these hubs of connectivity, KCTCS is providing three courses that can prepare people for jobs within the KentuckyWired project:

  • Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT)
  • Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing & Maintenance (CFOS/T)
  • Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist Course (CFOS/S)

Ready to start on your path to higher education? Great! Please select one of the five SOAR colleges for more information:
