Last fall, four partners in the Owensboro region came together to develop an innovative scholarship program that creates college opportunities for alternative high school students. It is estimated that 95% of these students come from working poor families; 90% are first-generation college students; 75% must work 15 hours or more each week while completing their high school education; and approximately 25% are homeless, live in parentless households, or have deceased parents. The Marilyn and William Young Charitable Foundation funded a two-year grant to provide scholarships for tuition and books to eligible graduates of Beacon Central High School. As its name reflects, the Beacon of Hope scholarship program makes the dream of a college education possible for a student population that is often left behind or under served. The Community College Foundation of Owensboro, the Marilyn and William Young Charitable Foundation, Beacon High School and Owensboro Community and Technical College District partnership exemplifies how working together can create opportunities never dreamed possible for these students.
