July 1 celebration joins tech, community colleges

he 1st of July was a historic occasion in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. It marked the first day that Kentucky's 15 technical colleges joined the 13 community colleges to form KCTCS.

To commemorate the day, some 350 faculty and staff from the technical and community colleges convened at The Rural Development Center in Somerset for a day of food, tours, exhibits and speeches.

"Education is the key to Kentucky's creation of a society that matches the quality of life on par with all of the United States," said Gov. Paul Patton, who joined with many of Kentucky's top education execu

tives in the celebration.
Also on hand were Dr. Gordon Davies, president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education; Dr. Jeff Hockaday, interim president of KCTCS;  and Martha C. Johnson, chair of the KCTCS Board of Regents.
Patton said he sees his responsibility as having vision and then finding the right people to fulfill that vision.  "I am determined that Kentucky will be the model for the rest of the nation and that education will lead the way," he said.
Explaining that he had personally presented all 13 community colleges with a check to supplement the 1997-98 budget, Patton presented a check for $3 million

to Kentucky Tech to help purchase new equipment.
The July 1 celebration also marked the formal introduction to KCTCS of Gordon Davies and Jeff Hockaday.
Hockaday complimented the Board of Regents: "The meeting I attended (on June 22) was one of the best I've witnessed in my 35 years of attending board meetings.  Many significant issues were decided without a single negative vote."
