Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College - Whitesburg Campus
Southeast Community College began offering classes in Letcher County in the 1970s. Classes were held at the local high schools; the courses were taught by local faculty.
Local leaders began to pursue a site for a campus in the late 1980s. The city had taken ownership of the old Coca Cola building and felt that it would be an ideal location for a local college.
1989--The Whitesburg Education Foundation was formed.
1989--An agreement was reached between the foundation and Southeast Community College to establish a campus center in the Coca Cola building.
1989--Renovation began on the Coca Cola building.
Fall 1990--Southeast Community College began operation. Three hundred eighty students were enrolled--the only semester in which the enrollment has been under four-hundred.
Mid 1990s--The Whitesburg campus saw an enormous growth in enrollment. It became obvious that more space would be needed to accommodate the student demand.
With the help of Congressman Hal Rogers, Southeast Community College received 1.25 million dollars to construct an Allied Health building.
1997--The Allied Health building was completed. This building has the Biology, Chemistry, and Allied Health Labs as well as the campus bookstore and faculty offices.
Student enrollment continued to be strong and the demand for additional space was evident.
State Representative Paul Mason assisted Southeast Community College in acquiring five million dollars to construct a state-of-the-art classroom building. Construction is now underway and is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2005.
Southeast Community College's Whitesburg Campus is a full-functioning campus offering three degree programs as well as a number of certificate programs.
The administration, faculty, and staff believe that the word community in our name defines us as a participating entity and willing partner in the betterment of our community.
The students at Southeast Community College are recognized as our most important assets.
