Evelyn Nicholson was changing lives for many years before earning an Associate of Arts degree from Madisonville Community College in 1997. The mother
of five children, Evelyn worked as a legal secretary for 20 years before returning to college. After graduation, Ms. Nicholson enrolled in Murray State
University's 2+2 Education Program on MCC's north campus. Ultimately, while battling health problems and raising a family, Evelyn earned her bachelor's
degree in 2002 and is now a respected third grade teacher at Madisonville's Jesse Stuart Elementary School. An early bird, she often arrives at work by
6 a.m. and shows her students the same care and devotion to learning that faculty members at MCC showed her. All of her children are either college
graduates or currently enrolled at some postsecondary institution, and Evelyn continues to give back by working as a church volunteer in outreach activities
to young children.

"I try to be a role model to my students in the same way that my MCC instructors were for me.
They were firm, fair, and expected a 100 percent effort from me. I demand the same from my
third graders, and I think they enjoy school better because of these expectations."
