Endowment Honors Katherine G. Peden HOPKINSVILLE, KY (March 14, 2006) -The Hopkinsville Chapter of the Business & Professional Women (B&PW) announced today the establishment of a Hopkinsville Community College scholarship endowment in honor of a former Kentucky dignitary.  "This endowment honors the memory of Katherine Peden, a Hopkinsville native and a former national president of B&PW," said Rita Brown, president of the Hopkinsville Business & Professional Women's Club.

Ms. Peden, who died January 8, 2006, was a pioneer in many arenas. She was a radio executive at WHOP Radio, a business owner and the first female commerce director in Kentucky. She also served national presidential appointments during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter. In 1968, Peden was also a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Kentucky.

"Our club is challenged and honored to take the lead in conjunction with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peden to establish this statewide scholarship award in Katherine Peden's name," Brown said.  She noted that Charles Peden, a Nicholasville resident, is Katherine's nephew.  According to Hill Ferguson, III, executive director of the Hopkinsville Community College Foundation, Inc., "It is most fitting that the local chapter to which Katie Peden belonged would sponsor this endowment. Mrs. Peden never forgot her roots and was a lifelong friend of Gov. Edward T. Breathitt under whose administration HCC was established." 

Katherine Peden Memorial Scholarship Endowment is an open-ended scholarship.  As such, anyone can contribute any amount at any time. The endowment is specifically for the benefit of any qualified child or grandchild of any Kentucky member of the B&PW attending Hopkinsville Community College.
