HOPKINSVILLE, KY (April 21, 2005) - Hopkinsville Community College officials announce the establishment of the David L. Riley Memorial "Servant's Heart" Scholarship Endowment. The perpetual fund will honor the Kentucky New Era journalist and 1982 graduate of Hopkinsville Community College. He was the son of the late Dr. Thomas L. Riley, HCC's founding president. Through an arrangement with U.S. Bank representative, Randy Newton, and the Riley family, memorial funds received honoring David Riley's memory will be held and perpetually invested by Hopkinsville Community College.

"Endowment gifts are very special in that they keep on giving forever," said Dr. Bonnie L. Rogers. "Scholarship endowments, in particular, help us to address a key college goal - increasing student access and success. It is indeed an honor that the family has entrusted us with the administration and stewardship of these memorial gifts honoring an individual who, through his selfless acts of community service, truly defined a servant's heart."

Spending distributions from the endowment will support scholarships for deserving students who enroll at HCC. The Riley family requested three selection criteria for the awards: (1) potential for academic success, (2) major in an academic program designed to transfer to a four-year university, and (3) demonstrated capacity for community involvement and service. Scholarship award recipients will be annually selected by HCC's existing academic scholarship committee.

The HCC Endowment is an aggregation of gifts provided by donors with the requirement that they be held and invested to generate earnings now and in future years to support the donor's intended purpose. The fund's principal cannot be spent, and earnings are generated year after year. The HCC Endowment ensures long-term funding for critical needs such as scholarship, academic support and technology.
