Student Memorial Scholarship Endowment Established

Hopkinsville Community College officials announced at a morning press conference today the establishment of a Student Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The perpetual fund honors students whose lives and educational pursuits were cut short by untimely death. The newly-created endowment provides a way for HCC to perpetually honor the students' memories through annual scholarships and to permanently recognize their impact and influence on the campus community.

A total of $15,000 pledged by two local organizations ($10,000 by Fort Campbell Federal Credit Union; $5,000 by Cayce Mill Supply) was used to establish the fund. An additional $1,565 received in memorial contributions honoring Crystal A. Keenan and Chaquela L. Kornegay - HCC students lost in separate traffic accidents in 2004 - will be invested in the endowment. A brochure lists the students' names In Memoriam.

"Endowment gifts are very special in that they keep on giving forever," said Jason Warren, HCC institutional advancement officer. "Scholarship endowments, in particular, help us to address a key college goal - increasing student access and success."

Spending distributions from the endowment will support scholarships for deserving students who enroll at HCC. Scholarship award recipients will be annually selected by HCC's existing academic scholarship committee. According to Warren, the first scholarship award will likely be made to a nursing student since both Crystal Keenan and Chaquela Kornegay had nursing as a career goal.

The HCC Endowment is an aggregation of gifts provided by donors with the requirement that they be held and invested to generate earnings now and in future years to support the donor's intended purpose. The principal cannot be spent, and earnings are generated year after year. The HCC Endowment ensures long-term funding for critical needs such as scholarships, academic support, and technology.

Additional investment gifts in the Student Memorial Scholarship Endowment may be made at any time in any amount. To obtain additional information or to make an investment, contact Hill Ferguson III at (270) 886-3921, ext. 6137 or via email at hill.ferguson@kctcs.edu.
