The theme for the Hazard Community and Technical College fund raising campaign is "Fulfilling the Promise". Leslie Countians will be glad to know, that's exactly what educators are doing! More than three fourths of their 4 million dollar goal have been raised! HCTC announced its campaign at the Leslie County center on Jan, 19, where the college has plans to create a new Bluegrass and Traditional Music program, and a portion of the gifts from the campaign will be used toward that program.
The campaign includes plans to raise enough money for 5 initiatives, including scholarships, equipment, promoting college preparedness, and to enhance the relationships and collaboration of teachers in school districts of the region; to invest in the arts and an "unrestricted" fund, so the College can be flexible in addressing unforeseen needs.
Fred Brashear, Chair of the HTC Board of Directors and co-chair of the campaign believes in the importance of supporting these initiatives because..." education is so vital to the region's growth." Brashear says..."We can improve the quality of life here in these mountains, if education is improved. The investment the College is showing toward this new music program is just one indication of their good faith in Leslie County. I hope Leslie County can return that good faith by showing more financial support to the College".
HCTC President/CEO, Jay K. Box also commented on his vision for a better region. "We want to enjoy a standard of living that meets or exceeds the national average; we want successful businesses that are globally competitive. We need investments and partnerships with individuals, businesses and foundations to achieve our dreams", Dr. Box said.
The Kentucky Community and technical College System (KCTCS) was represented at the news conference by Vice President, Tim Burcham, who added..."Private funds are absolutely necessary to secure the future"...and to achieve our "Fulfilling the Promise".
Leslie County Donors were honored at the event with a display of names which included: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brashear, Hyden Citizens Bank, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lewis, and HCTC Leslie County Center employees.
Campaign announcements were also made in Hindman at the Kentucky School of Craft, on the Hazard Campus, and later at the Lee's College Campus. The news conference was complete with "catered lunch" from Kudzu Korner and entertainment provided by Paul Wooton and family. Leslie Countians should be proud to support their local College!
