Big Sandy Questions & Answers

Why should Big Sandy Community and Technical College conduct a major gifts campaign?

After conducting an extensive strategic planning process and commissioning a community feasibility study, more than $11 million of needs were identified. Community members consider $3 million critical, and encouraged the leadership of the College to move forward with a major gifts campaign.

As a tax-supported institution, why does Big Sandy Community and Technical College need to raise private funds?

BSCTC is a state assisted, not state funded school and recent developments in state funding have resulted in cuts to already limited funding. Despite this lack of additional funds, enrollment at BSCTC has risen more than 50% over the past 5 years, and projections indicate that this trend will continue. Private, recurring support is critical and will ensure that BSCTC continues to meet the needs of this community.

Does the College have a recognized foundation that I can give my gift to?

The Big Sandy College Educational Foundation, Inc. (BSCEF) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and has been the fundraising agent for the College since 1962. The Foundation was the first recognized consolidated foundation in the KCTCS system. The Foundation will act as the administrative management agent for certain campaign donations to insure proper, accurate and annually audited accounting procedures.

Is my gift to the campaign tax deductible?

As not-for-profit organizations, all gifts to BSCTC and BSCEF are eligible to be tax deductible. Will the campaign accept multi-year commitments? Pledges enable contributions to realize optimal tax savings and to make a more significant investment in BSCTC than might be possible with a one-time donation. This campaign will continue for a five-year pledge period. All investments will be gratefully received and properly acknowledged.

Why should I give to BSCTC?

BSCTC is vital to our community because it provides a workforce to businesses and industries in the region and because it prepares local people for their roles as responsible citizens. Some of the region's largest employers report that a high percentage of their workforce is composed of former students or graduates of BSCTC. Also, most families in the area have been touched in some way by the college. We want to ensure that BSCTC continues to provide excellent and accessible education to the Big Sandy Region.
