Student Support Fund Established at ACTC
Ashland, KY--A gift from G. Fred Charles of Ashland, Kentucky will be used to establish an emergency support fund for the students at Ashland Community & Technical College.
"I have become aware of some of the desperate needs of a number of students at ACTC who may have their education pursuits impaired or disrupted by reasons of unexpected burdens or sudden financial hardships. Particularly at risk are those single mothers with infants or minor children who are working diligently to provide themselves with better opportunities," said Charles.
In 1941, Charles was a first year student at Ashland Junior College, the predecessor of ACTC, when World War II interrupted his education. He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps, served in the Pacific Theatre, and was awarded an Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he continued his education and received his Bachelors and Law degrees. Charles joined the Legal Department of Ashland Oil, Inc. in 1950 and had several managerial positions prior to his retirement.
"The enrollment of Ashland Junior College in 1941 was approximately 180 students and our current enrollment for all students exceeds 4100," said Frank Salisbury, ACTC Director of Advancement.
"With more students we have a greater need for student support," said Dr. Greg Adkins, ACTC President & CEO. "Support from generous and caring people like Fred Charles is so vital to our continued success. I also know that Associate Professor Pam Duelley was instrumental in establishing this fund. The caring and support of students by faculty members, such as Pam, contributes immensely in successfully educating our students."
A committee of ACTC faculty members appointed by the ACTC President will administer the emergency fund. "This fund will provide for immediate and direct assistance to students who are in critical need for financial help in order to assist them in their educational pursuits at ACTC. With this gift from Mr. Charles our Fulfilling the Promise Gifts Campaign is now at approximately $2,940,000," said Salisbury.
